Wearing a camera for our own safety has some unintended effects, like capturing the moment you save another’s life, perhaps.

You see a lot of scary stuff out there on the road. That’s why a lot of bikers have started wearing GoPro cameras to protect themselves or provide evidence in case of something bad happening to them.

An unintended side effect is capturing bad things happening to other people on the road. YouTube is littered with examples of this, but this most recent event was deemed newsworthy enough to be covered by the UK’s Daily Mail and several other online publications. The reason is because that biker’s keen awareness of his surroundings and his quick reflexes, he was able to access the situation and offer immediate help.

The incident was captured by Colorado resident Brady Allen, who was heading back from Denver after visiting his girlfriend. In front of him, a black Honda CR-V crossover was driving erratically, before veering off the road.

The small SUV crossed over into the other lane, which was thankfully empty, before going off the opposite side of the road and colliding with the landscape. The impact was hard enough to stop the crossover dead in its tracks, lifting the rear wheels off the ground and nearly flipping the CR-V.

It turns out that retired Army medic Brady was in the right place at the right time. He rushed to the aid of the elderly driver, who was thankfully conscious. Short of a bloody nose caused by the deployment of the airbag, he was no worse for the wear, although he was taken to the hospital for observation.

Apparently, the driver suffered a cardiac episode and briefly lost consciousness, causing the accident. Thanks to the safety of modern cars, he was able to more or less walk away from his heavily damaged car.

If anything, that should make us motorcyclists even more cognizant of our surroundings. As the stakes get lower for drivers, they get higher for us. Stay safe, stay alert, and stay alive.
