1966 FLH Shovelhead

H-D Forums member scores one sweet vintage Shovelhead. And with the help of others, he’s making it even better.

If there’s one singular place that stands above the rest when it comes to showing off your sweet new ride, it’s the Harley-Davidson Forums. Where else can you find such a large group of like-minded folks with a two-wheeled passion akin to yours? Now of course, we see dozens of sweet bikes posted here in the forums each and every day. And while they’re all special, many are just brand new rides straight off the dealer lot. Which makes old school classics like hellonewman‘s awesome “new” 1966 FLH Shovelhead worth mentioning.

“Picked it up this morning after seeing it in an ad last week. With a lot of help from johnjzjz identifying key details, I pulled the trigger. I love it! Bars and flames gotta go right away while I try to leave the rest alone and figure out what I need to start putting it back closer to original. Gotta see if I can find out its original color as well.”

Obviously, we like this Shovelhead as is. But we can’t blame the OP for wanting to make it more original. And that might not be a bad idea, given the bike’s uniqueness, as johnjzjz notes.

“Good thing it’s a right side petcock. A one year only gas tank worth about an arm and a leg today.”

And once the OP got a chance to dig into things, he was able to make a few additional discoveries.

“The previous owner replaced the bars, speedo, and wheels. Threw the original wheels in the garbage. Might have the bars, has the old speedo and console which I’ll be getting along with any other items he may have. I also have hard bags for it complete with matching flames and a chrome guard arrangement for the bags.

Making it more correct is my goal, but I want to ride it. It’ll be like one of those ’69 Z28s you see at the local car show that’s a pretty honest car but the guy didn’t bother putting the smog pump and plumbing back on.”
It doesn’t take long before the OP is gathering up parts for his sweet Shovelhead.
“Spare parts are being delivered to me Tuesday. Previous owner said when he bought the bike it had a Wide Glide front end on it with a 21″ front wheel. He rebuilt the FL front end and put it back on the bike. I guess that’s why there’s a brake caliper in the pic. I’m glad to get the original speedo and console back.”
