UPDATE: California’s Lane-Splitting Bill, AB 51, Approved by Senate

ab 51

In a story that we’ve followed closely for you, we’re pleased to announce yet another step forward in the journey for the lane-splitting bill, AB 51 to become a law.

Last week the California Senate approved the bill, and sent it back to the California State Assembly, where it will be analyzed for gray areas and loopholes, which many believe is where this bill could possibly become stagnant for awhile.

The biggest concern is the gray areas of what most people perceive as “lane-splitting.” Issues like, speed limited for lane-splitting, in which directions, under what conditions and when to and when not to lane-split are the major concerns. While most are confident that it will be approved, it will be an enormous task for the California Highway Patrol to establish the right parameters for monitoring and enforcing, while the safety guideline writers will have to establish the right training and wording necessary to introduce “safe lane-splitting” when riders first study for their rider’s license.

As you can see, it’s not as “simple” as just approving it into a law, an entire organism of guidelines have to be in place to hopefully keep everyone safe behind the wheel and handlebars.

Stay tuned…
