WHAT’S UP IN THE FORUMS: Unsticking a Stuck Harley

Harley-Davidson Forums members deliver answers — and humor — after Ultra Glide owner faces a very sticky situation.

It’s probably safe to say that most of you reading this will never drive your Harley through the mud, let alone get it stuck in it. But hey, if you do, we’re here to help. And you know what they say about knowledge: You can never have too much. Plus, maybe this will give you the courage to finally enter that hill climb event at your next rally.

The nightmare of getting your precious ride stuck in mud became a reality for H-D forum member DaveGTR11 recently, however. Dave found his Ultra Glide in a sticky predicament and wisely sought out advice from his fellow members. The answers he received, as always, were quite helpful. And sometimes hilarious.

Ghost13 chimed in with some solid advice right off the bat.

“If you’re competent… and have competent help – tow it out using a nylon tow strap.

If you’re energetic – dig it out (I’d say put a jack under it.., lift it up…, then place boards under the wheels – but you need to ensure the jack doesn’t sink down)

If you’re unsure – call a wrecker

Mud can be a bitch (stuck a tractor once…, a dozer once…, and buried a jeep on another occasion)”

Rocket67 provided some more time consuming advice that, in all fairness, would probably work.

“Put a cover over it and wait until summer. Be sure to turn the motor off.”

Mark @ Baker Drivertrain found the situation to ripe for a sales pitch.

“Well if it’s not going anywhere you could install one of our reverses and see if that helps.”

Using a tow strap ranked as the number one piece of advice, but Nevada72 also suggested filming the attempt in case of shenanigans.

“Go to the engine guard/crash bar and close to the bike. Go real easy and have the bike running and in gear. Let the bike help itself out of the hole while gf very slowly moves forward with tow vehicle.

Make sure to take a video in case something goes terribly wrong.”

Unfortunately, we haven’t heard back from the OP to find out if or how he managed to free his Harley. Hopefully, no matter what, there’s video evidence of the attempt.
