three wheels

It seems like Harley-Davidson trikes are getting more and more popular. Love them or hate them, they offer a distinctive look and riding style unlike anything else. A recent forum thread asked owners what they like best about three wheels?

A common thread between Tri-Glide and Freewheeler owners is the desire to spend more time with their significant others. Many of the respondents said that their wives didn’t feel comfortable riding on the back of a traditional motorcycle anymore – others said they were never comfortable in the first place! For many couples, a trike is a nice compromise in this regard. Besides, what’s a road trip without your best friend and sidekick at your side, or in this case, behind you?

Other respondents cited previous injuries – motorcycle-related and otherwise – that made holding up an 800-pound bike impossible. Some feel safer on a trike as a result of the added stability, and others would be unable to ride at all otherwise due to the severity of their previous injuries. After all, three wheels are better than, no wheels.

In addition, advanced age can make handling a heavy motorcycle very difficult. Rather than give up a lifelong hobby, many have turned to Harley trikes as a way to stay involved in our wonderful community. I think everyone can agree that’s something special. If you’re the type to scoff at trikes, have a chat with the owner next time you see one. There’s a good chance they can tell you a thing or two about motorcycling!
