‘HD Forums’ Member of the Month Has One Impressive Riding Resume
Along with his wife, our newest Member of the Month has racked up an insane amount of miles over the years.
The HD Forums Member of the Month designation generally goes to someone who’s been riding for decades, which means that none of them are strangers to most parts of this great country of ours. That’s certainly true of April’s MOTM – FLSTFI Dave, aka Dave McKale, who’s been riding for 46 years now. However, McKale doesn’t just cruise with his buddies – he has a real-life riding partner in his wife Donna, who has racked up an amazing 320,000 miles on her own since 2007.
Donna also happened to convince McKale to take a cruise after his 20-year career in the Navy was over, which he was hesitant to do at first. Their Harleys went with them, of course, and the two wound up riding in some exotic locations like St. Kitts, St. Martin, and Puerto Rico. McKale was hooked after that, and the couple has embarked on a few nautical trips with their bikes over the last few years.
Speaking of bikes, McKale’s had a lot of them. Since 2009, that includes 5 dirt bikes, 12 street bikes, and a whopping 7 CVOs. Currently, he owns three Harleys – a 2019 CVO Road Glide, 2013 CVO Road King, and 2003 Fat Boy. Also since 2009, he’s touched pavement in 47 U.S. states with no trailer and only needs to hit North Dakota to cross off the lower 48.
Along the way, he’s also earned more than one Iron Butt Award, including the Saddlesore 24, which is accomplished by riding 1,000 consecutive miles in 24 hours. But that wasn’t quite enough for him, so McKale also did the Bun Burner 1500, which is, you guessed it, completing 1,500 miles, albeit in a bit more time at 36 hours. Regardless, that apparently wasn’t enough for him, because McKale then turned around and completed the Bun Burner 1500 Gold, which requires you to go the same distance in 24 hours.
Aside from those epic accomplishments, McKale and his wife live in East Tennessee, so they have plenty of beautiful roads nearby for even shorter trips. But they’ve also been on pretty much every notable road and to almost every scenic spot in the U.S. that you can think of, which are all detailed in this lengthy thread.
