Harley Ultra Classic Gets 'Dipped to Death' in Crazy Detail Experiement

It turns out that you can hydro dip an entire Harley-Davidson motorcycle, but like the characters in every artificial intelligence film neglected to ask, “should you?”

The boys from Bikes and Beards are at it again. Sean Kerr chose his Harbor Freight Predator 6.5 horsepower engine-swapped 1998 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic for one very specific endeavor. The bike was selected to be plunged into a pool containing a concoction of paints. “It’s possibly the world’s first ever full motorcycle hydro dip,” said Kerr. The intended result of hydro dipping is a psychedelic instant paint job from another dimension. In theory, it sounds pretty cool. In execution, not so much.

Kerr from Bikes and Beards chose to dip his entire Harley using a crane and an above ground pool. Normally, motorcycle owners will dip individual parts, like gas tanks and fenders. The process involves a tub or bucket with a cocktail of surface-dwelling oil-based paints. As the primer coated part passes through the top layer, a pattern of different colors is transferred onto the surface of the part. The result of dipping is typically a wild blend of colors and seemingly textured layers.

In the case of the “Harbor Davidson,” the first attempt was less than successful. However, after some time in the shop, the finished product sported a kind of adolescent dream of space motif. “It’s the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen,” said Kerr. Needless to say, the bike is a unique, creative example of a truly custom motorcycle that is always going to turn some heads.
