Harley Knucklehead with Sidecar Is American History on Wheels

Knucklehead

This storied Knucklehead is begging for a new owner and a second lease on life.

Given the incredible popularity of Harley’s legendary Knucklehead motorcycles, we come across more than our fair share while perusing the internet. But rarely do we find any that come with an original sidecar. Nor the pretty amazing history of this well-preserved 1939 EL, which we spotted recently on eBay. In fact, this old Knucklehead has so much appeal, it appears that the previous owner simply couldn’t stay away from it.

Like a scorned lover, the seller’s father owned the vintage bike and sidecar twice. He originally purchased it back in the early ’80s, performing a good deal of work to bring it back to its former glory. But he seemingly tired of it a few years later, trading the combo for a British sports car. And yet, like the one that got away, he just couldn’t get that old Knucklehead out of his mind. And when it popped back up for sale in the mid-90s, he scooped it right back up.

Despite the old Harley’s (re)addition to the family, it sat mostly unused for a couple of years in storage. And then it became an afterthought for 20 years and hasn’t been ridden since. Which is obviously a real shame. The seller does claim that the engine is free and it doesn’t appear that much needs to be done to get it running again, at least.

Outside of a little patina, it sure looks like this vintage Knucklehead is ready to ride. The paint and trim look to be in excellent condition, which vibes with the longtime storage claim. And with Knucklehead prices quickly rising, a mechanically-inclined individual could easily whip this thing back into shape. If nothing else, this Harley deserves to see some kind of road miles. Whether it be a nice weekend cruise or just in some kind of parade!
