Harley-Davidson Scores Its First King of the Baggers Win at Road America
Harley sweeps the podium at its home track, earning its first King of the Baggers win in the young series’ history.
MotoAmerica’s King of the Baggers is an event seemingly made for Harley-Davidson. After all, we are talking about a motorcycle manufacturer that’s been cranking out baggers longer than just about anyone else. But until now, H-D was still seeking its first win in the young series. This past weekend, it finally smashing through that barrier with not only a win at Wisconsin’s Road America but also a podium sweep.
Kyle Wyman played the hero, finishing first and making history at his (and Harley-Davidson’s) home track, with Travis Wyman coming in second and Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson’s Hayden Gillim finishing third. Wyman did have a bit of luck on his side, however, as the current points leader – Tyler O’Hara and his Mission Foods S&S Cycle Indian Challenger – was forced to exit the race with a mechanical problem.
Regardless, Wyman started from the pole position in round two of the 2021 Mission King Of The Baggers Championship and led every lap of the race until the checkered flag in a dominant effort. He was even more excited to see his brother – a newcomer and Kyle’s teammate on Harley’s factory team – finish right behind him.
“It’s amazing,” Wyman said after the race. “We got (Harley-Davidson’s) Bill Davidson congratulating me in victory lane. The who’s-who of the motor company is here. I think they gave away 200 tickets to employees this weekend. They’re people that came out specifically just to watch this race, so to get it done here in Harley’s backyard is just an incredible feeling. Those guys deserve it. They work so hard. Harley has put a pretty large number of people on this project full-time. They were told, ‘look, this is racing. You don’t punch out at 5 o’clock.’ Those guys are putting in the hours and putting in the extra time, and it’s all paying off.”
“It’s amazing also to have my brother finish second. I don’t know what happened to Tyler (O’Hara). I was trying to just put the pressure on him. I don’t know what happened. Just really glad I could execute and put those first few laps down. I think the third lap of the race for me was my best lap. I think like a 27.4. That was about everything. At that point, I looked back out at the chicane and didn’t see anyone. So, from there I could kind of cruise it home.”
Wyman and Team Harley will try to start a streak when King of the Baggers reconvenes at Laguna Seca for the next round, which takes place July 9-11.
