This Harley-Davidson Military Motorcycle Sold for 40 Grand
During World War II, Harley-Davidson produced thousands of motorcycles to meet transportation demand. For the majority of the war, the WLA was produced and used, running on the 45-cubic-inch, 750cc side-valve engine. However, these weren’t exactly the most reliable machines.
In an effort to match the quality and reliability of the Germans’ BMW motorcycles, namely the BMW R71, the Army asked H-D to build a bike that had shaft drives and ran cooler. So H-D ditched the V-Twin for a new project with a flat-twin boxer engine and named the motorcycle the XA for Experimental Army. By the time the project and its first order of 1,000 units was completed, however, the Jeep was firmly establishing itself as the Army vehicle of choice.
Thanks to the limited amount produced and the rare type of non-traditional (to Harley-Davidson) used in the XA, it’s become a collector’s dream. This particular one that was for sale through Bonham’s sold for $40,916. Check it out.
