Happy New Year and Another Dyna and Softail Recall

Harley-Davidson is recalling certain Dyna and Softail models over a faulty banjo bolt which could cause the brakes to fail.

The recall hits 19,015 motorcycles manufactured between 22 August, 2011, through to 24 February, 2012.

According to Harley, the threads for the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder may corrode, causing a sudden loss of brake fluid, which would result in a loss of the front brake system.

The Milwaukee firm says it will notify affected owners, and dealers will ‘flush and inspect the front brake master cylinder and, if necessary, replace the master cylinder, free of charge.’

The recall is expected to begin on 14 January, 2015 and affects the following models: FXST103, FLSTC, FLSTC103, FLSTF, FLSTF103, FXDL, FXDWG, FXDWG103, FXDC, FXDB, FLSTN, FLSTN103, FLSTC103Shrine, FLSTFB, FLSTFB103, FXS, FXS103, FLS, FLS103, FLD, FLD103, FXDF, and FXDF103.

Go look at your brake bolts, check the torque setting, and then get them swapped out. The last thing you want is for the brakes to fail. Most people I know don’t leave their bikes dirty enough for rust to form.

We often think of cleaning and washing our motorcycles as exactly that –  just cleaning and washing. It is an essential part of motorcycle maintenance, it’s hard to see a leak, or damage if it’s covered in grit and grime. So get that banjo bolt fixed and keep the rubber on the road.
