Did You Know Tires Expire?

Well, did you know? Most people look at their tires and as long as they don’t see dry rot think the tire is still good. That isn’t always the case.

Why?

Giving a definitive expiration date answer on tires is definitely not simple. Tires carrying a heavier loads or left outdoors in very hot temperatures with infrequent use are examples of severe service. This definitely shortens the tires lifespan. Daily driven tires that are stored in a garage will lengthen a tires lifespan.

Like all things if you maintain your tires by checking the pressure, avoiding heavy impacts, and regular cleanings help. Don’t forget to make sure you keep your tires balanced and that your motorcycle is tracking straight.

If you have a heavy weight bike and carry passengers and luggage often you need to make sure you don’t skimp out on your tires. They need to be rated, just like car tires, to handle the loads you intend to carry.

So how long do they last?

If you ride daily and go through tires at the rate of a set less than every 2 years you will never run into a situation where the compound has lost it’s grip and flexibility. If you are on year 4 with the same set you may be looking at a tire that is 50% less effective than a newer tire with less tread. The silica and other materials that make up a tires construction break down over time, they become stiff, and no longer heat cycle or give the same amount of grip they once did.

So go visually check the tire on your motorcycle. Check the manufacturing date on the side and if they are getting older or you don’t ride on them a lot you may want to get them changed soon.
