Build threads can be highly educational for both the one working on the build and those who are following it. The one engaging in the work is able to get both basic and complicated questions answered with relative ease, and the followers are able to learn more about how to do the work if they ever need to do it themselves.

It’s a great process, and it works out quite well. However, the primary thing that scares people away from attempting to take on a project is — quite simply — money. That’s why this build is so great.

HDForums member TheMakani has taken on a 2009 Sportster 883 Custom build, but he has a very strict budget. He received the ride in a trade for his truck, and thus he plans to make it into an Iron 883 clone. His goal is to use as little money as possible, which so far has worked out surprisingly well.

He recently managed to purchase an entire XL883L parts bike to borrow from for only a little more than he would have spent on the tank he wanted alone. He intends to borrow as much as he can from the parts bike, which seems like a wise decision. He also picked up some aftermarket LED turn signals and has added them to the ride. They may not be the brightest, but they are certainly functional. He has also already proceeded to trim the fender to his liking.

This build is definitely going places, and it is most certainly worth following! Go drop by TheMakani’s build thread and show your support!
