H-D Forums Build Thread: 1965 FLH Restoration

A classic Panhead gets a new lease on life from its owner of fifty years.

Everyone loves a good build thread, especially when it’s a cool vintage bike going under the knife. One of our members, Dave Newman (who goes by the very appropriate handle of “panz4ever”), is restoring his 1965 FLH. He’s had since shortly after it was new.

Upon returning from Vietnam in late 1969, he had a bad experience with a then-new Shovelhead and vowed “never again.” He found a 1965 FLH Panhead and he’s kept it ever since.

Since then, he’s had quite a cool collection of bikes, but the ’65 FLH always held a special place in his heart. With the birth of his grandson, he decided that it was high time to give the old girl a makeover. He’s even adding a sidecar for his new favorite riding buddy.

Newman explains that he hasn’t used the bike much in 12 years or so. In the process of tearing it down, he discovers many incorrect parts, which he intends to remedy during this restoration.

However, over the many years and many thousands of miles he’s logged on this bike, he’s got a lot of memories. From the sound of things, he’s going to make a lot more still when it’s back together.

Many of the parts are original, though. The restoration is proving very useful for Panhead owners here on H-D Forums. Newman is all too happy to oblige, with detailed photos showing markings and details of important parts.

This bike is more than just an awesome project for Newman. It’s proving to be an invaluable resource for the vintage Harley-Davidson community, too.

Even though he’s only been at it for a month or so, he’s making quick progress. The bike is already stripped down to the bare frame. The frame, swingarm, and triple tree have been media blasted and repainted, ready to accept fresh new (and freshened used) parts.

This will definitely be a restoration worth watching. Given the speed at which Newman is working, we should expect the payoff very soon. That’s one lucky grandkid!
