Aermacchi

The story of how legendary American motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson, and Italian builder Aermacchi came together is a fascinating one. Founded in 1912 as a builder of seaplanes, Aermacchi began making two-wheeled creations following WWII. In 1960, H-D bought 50% of the company with an eye toward recapturing a piece of the youth market from Honda.

Out of that relationship, a small batch of road racing bikes was built for the North American market. These were competent motorcycles that were offered in a variety of configurations. At first, only a 250cc Sprint model was offered, with a bigger stroke 350cc bowing in 1969. These bikes all had a reputation for fun, and that’s what has made them a collector’s item today.

This 1973 H-D has been converted into a replica of one of the finest motorcycles to come from the Harley-Davidson and Aermacchi relationship. The 1967 CRTT. Only around 35 were produced, making them a very valuable collectible these days. But with a low price of only $9,000, this replica is about as close as you can get to the real thing. Without dropping serious cash, that is.

1967 was a special year for the CRTT, because it brought serious upgrades in braking power. The frame design unique to the CRTT, featured an L-shaped forged side-plate which supported the rear of the engine. The short stroke engine was even capable of revving north of 10,000 rpm!

Harley’s relationship with Aermacchi lasted until 1978, when it sold all of its portion to the Castiglioni brothers. As a result, the duo would go on to experience great success with Cagiva, Ducati, and Husqvarna. Thankfully, these bikes live on as a reminder of a time when Harley was about more than cruisers. The sporty bikes they produced in unison with Aermacchi are some of the most unique and beautiful rides to ever sport the H-D badge.
