The 5 Coolest Harleys from Classic Cars at the Palace
A car-collecting couple thins the herd — and there’s a few Harleys in the mix.
Jerry and June Smith are a match made in heaven. Jerry’s a wrencher, June’s a driver. Their shared love of cars and motorcycles has sustained them for decades, and now, 250 cars later, they’re looking to thin the herd a bit and move on. Their collection will be offered by Greensboro Auto Auction Classic Car at their Jerry and June Smith No Reserve Collection Sale.
The Smiths are more than just car lovers, though. Their collection includes some impressive two-wheeled toys as well, and some are included in the sale. We’ve picked our favorite Harleys from the herd.
First off is this immaculate 1976 SS 250. This pint-sized performer has a 250cc engine — that’s a mere 13 cubic inches — and hails from the AMF era. That means the Helvetica Harley-Davidson font and gradient stripe graphics are back in style, and this would be a great match for the 2018 Sportster you just picked up. Most of these bikes were ridden hard and put away wet, and are few and far between these days, let alone in this condition.
Next up is a 2001 Road King, looking simply ravishing in blue & white. It’s a suitably classic color combination for a suitably classic bike. We really love Road Kings here at HDF — they’re a great touring bike that doesn’t give up too much in the looks department. Each one that comes off the assembly line is a future classic in our eyes, but we’re especially fond of this one.
Of course, for a day trip, a Softail will do, and this pewter and white 2008 Softail Deluxe is equally as classy as the Road King we just showed you — especially with those whitewall tires. We know they’re factory, but it’s just one of many reason we love the Softail Deluxe here at HDForums. This one’s got a 1584 Twin Cam and a six-speed transmission, which would make day trips a breeze. The windshield and luggage rack help, too. From bar-hopping to touring, this Softail would do it all.
Another great bike offered up for sale is this 2001 Sportster 1200 Custom. There’s nothing quite like a black Sportster with just the right amount of chrome, and the red details really make the difference. Of course, a trip to the Harley parts counter for 2018 tank graphics could have you matching the 1976 SS 250 you just bought. Like those bikes, Sportsters often end up pretty beat and used-up, so it’s nice to see this one in such good shape.
The last bike we’re showing you is the cream of the crop, and in our opinion, the best bike at the auction. This 1981 Harley-Davidson was modified into a retro-style chopper, complete with a raked springer front end, a peanut tank, and a king & queen seat. It’s running as a pair with a similarly customized Chevy pickup truck, so if you’re looking for a new bike hauler, this is the one you don’t want to miss.
