1947 Harley-Davidson

The 1940s were a special time for Harley-Davidson. 1941 saw the introduction of the FL, a model that soldiered on unchanged until 1948. It brought with it the new 74 cubic inch version of the Knucklehead OHV engine. Lovers of both the FL and the Knucklehead should go nuts over this 1947 Harley-Davidson FL.

The Knucklehead received its nickname thanks to the distinct shape of the engine’s valve covers. Replacing the old Flathead was a two cylinder overhead valve, pushrod activated, 45 degree version of the V-twin with two valves per cylinder. The Knucklehead was a beloved engine and rose to fame in the late ’60s in California’s chopper culture.

This particular 1947 FL has all the distinctive characteristics of a true Knucklehead, and a whole lot more. After living with the same owner for 33 years, it’s up for sale and boy, is it a glorious example. Not much information is given on the vintage bike, but we can gain a lot of clues by looking at it.

The paint is in pretty darn good shape, as is all the trim. Every original piece appears to be intact and in working order. Mileage is listed at 15,683 and is said to be original. The current owner had some careful restoration work performed in the past. As a result, the FL’s originality has been retained.
