Default Charging

My 77 xlt has developed a charging problem. The gen lite doesn't come on. I put a new reg on and the problem is still there, I can take the cover off the reg and make it lite up by pushing the points closed. The whole problem started when the pos cable shorted against the frame, then I found the nut on the gen drive gear loose. Help. Thanks

Have you tried polarizing the regulator?

You want your generator light TO COME ON?
If it comes on, that means the generator is not producing a charge.
Most of us want that light to never come on because if it does, we have generator problems.
I dunno, maybe I am missing something here......pg

The generator signal light has 2 wires connected in its circuit.
Lets start at the voltage regulator.
I am referring to a 1973-74 wiring diagram, but yours should be the same.

On the 'GEN' terminal of the regulator there should be 2 tan wires. One goes to the generator 'A' terminal and the other goes to your generator signal light. This wire to the light is tan until it comes to a connector, then it is black going a short distance to the light.
Out of the light is a white wire. This goes a short distance to the handlebar area and connects to an insulated terminal that will have 1 white wire and 4 orange wires there on that same terminal.
Make sure these wires are connected up as described.............pg
