Default Cam timing - running rough

Like anyone else new to the IH world, I pulled the cam cover for an oil leak. Long story short, a couple of cam gears fell out. I read thru the service manual (HD not Clymer) and lined up the dots on the cams and crank. Put it back together, rolled it over by hand to check for binding. All felt good, fired it up but now runs rough and won't hold an low idle. It throttles up slow and pops a bit thru the carb when I throttle it. I didn't retime the ignition with a light but did adjust the adv and retarded a little to look for a change. No change. I did notice the front exhaust gases were a lot cooler than the back by putting my hand over the end of the pipe while&nbsp\\;checking for a sucking valve.
&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;Would a tight valve lash do this? Could I be off a tooth on the cam timing? I don't know how to advance and retart cam timing on this set up? Any ideas?? Any help getting back to idling would be great! Thanks guys!

Before you tear into the gearcase again, are you sure the pushrod adjustment is correct? That could explain alot of what you have going on.

Glad you mentioned that. I was thinking the same thing and going to check that right now. Hopefully I am just used to setting Chevy&nbsp\\;lash &nbsp\\;

Ok dtimekw&nbsp\\; I had this problem. I took my cam cover off and my cams fell out now from what I understand and I had a hell of a time getting them all back in the most important thing is make sure you are at top dead ceanter and yes them timing marks on the cams do have to be rite on the key is to follow the manual they say what cams go in first like 12345 so on. I almost forsure this is your problem and also with the push rods the can tough to adjust alot of mechanics well that work on bikes alot can just tell by feel. When I did mine I was totally wrong on the adjustment but best of luck to ya also make sure them paper like thin cam washers all go back on

Well, I took a stab at the pushrods and sure enough, they were too tight. I loosened them up, rolled it over a few times by hand and double checked. Fired it up and it's back to where it was (running and holding idle). Seems like I set them too tight. I feel like a dummy but I'll know not to do that again [sm=oopssign.gif]

&nbsp\\;Thanks for the replies!!

Don't feel like a dummy, just less experienced, and a valuable way to gain experience is through screw-ups and failures. That's what leaves the biggest impressions on me and are the hardest forgotten. The experience that the guys on this forum brings is invaluable. Don't be shy to fess up to something stupid you may have done because that knowledge&nbsp\\;will help someone else later just as it helped you.
