replace clutch plates

any help on replacing clutch plates on a 73 ironhead&nbsp\\; maybe a diogram if anyone has one or hell, any advice would be great thanks

Best advice I can give is to get a shop manual for it.

Remove the primary cover. Your gonna have to make&nbsp\\;a tool to remove the releasing disk if you don't have a clutch spring compressor tool. Its easy though. Get some allthread (same size as cover screws but longer) and screw them into the primary cover srew holes(2 screws across from each other). Now slide a sturdy steel bar with 2 slots in it over the allthread. Using washers and nuts tighten down until you take the pressure off the 6 nuts on the pressure plate studs. Remove the retaining ring.&nbsp\\;Remove the 6 nuts. Now back off the nuts on the allthread&nbsp\\;until you've released all spring pressure. Get the bar out of the way and your ready to remove the&nbsp\\;outer Drive Plate. Now the plates (8)&nbsp\\;and discs (8)&nbsp\\;are ready to come out. Replace plates and discs in correct order.
This is where piongear gave me great advice. Get 6 stud spacers (if not there)so when putting everything back together all you have to do for correct clutch spring tension is tighten the 6 stud nuts tight against the spacers. The 73 didn't have spacers. Hope this helps, but getting a manual sure will make all of this clearer.

i have an 81 and by no means do i claim to be a bike mechanic....but i just replaced the clutch in my bike for the first time.be ready for the oil when you get the case loose.....even though i drained it and leaned the bike waaayy over there was still alot left.well eneough to make a big mess.also my haynes book said to take the primary chain off along with the gears alltogether.....for me i decided to just take the clutch plate off.so i skipped a good bit of what it said to do.i didnt see the point.i did however checked the teeth for wear/broken teeth etc.im sure you could see them better if you took the whole thing off...i didnt with no regrets.if someone post and says you should then maybe you should.im just telling you what i decided to do.also if you dont want to make a tool to realease plate pressure you can buy a gear puller....it will work for this purpose at least on my 81.i paid 20 bucks at harbor freight for 3 but i have also been in need of them for a long while.also the book tells you to back off the clutch adjusting nut but remember to tighten it back up a little before you put the caseing back on.......when i did it i had a little issue of it not being tight eneough&nbsp\\; and i&nbsp\\;would have ran&nbsp\\;the risk of the three little bearings getting out of position(makes sense when you see it) had i not tightened up a little.-if you dont have a manual of some type i would get one....if you get a non fact manual i would&nbsp\\;NOT buy a haynes i would get a clymer.hope it made a little sense.good luck.
