Default old gasket

Does anyone know the best way to remove old gaskets? I'm cleanning up my crankcase and tappet guides , and the old gaskets are really stuck on. I've tried "gasket remover" (wow, stinks!) and a plastic putty scrapper, but at this rate I'll be done in 2010.

Thanks.
