Default Q for the Panhead experts

OK, I was out riding today, full tank of gas and after about 45 miles, it starts to sputter as if out of gas... (what?) so I pulled out the plunger on the left tank (reserve right?). Got to the gas station, the right tank is empty but the left is almost full. So this may seem a dumb question, is the purpose of the plunger to switch to left tank and not the reserve?

sound like you have the wrong fuel cap on the left tank, the right caps for the internal petcock tanks are both vented. seeing how there is no vent crossover like the later models.

Ok, that sounds logical and thanks. BTW, when you say vented, does that mean a one-way vent, as in allows for air to come into the tank or just a vent in general?

I picked up a vented gas cap for the left tank yesterday, fits perfect and almost an exact match. Will keep y'all posted. Thanks again.

Did some riding.... looks like the vented cap (both sides vented) was the answer. No spills, overflows, leaks. Thanks to the forum once again.
