I read or heard somewhere (probably here) that the stock HD filter has some sort of extra bypass that allows oil to get where it needs to go faster on cold starts? From what I understand, aftermarket filters don;t have this and it is and for the bike.
and you get no filtration during bypass. This is one of the negatives to a paper filter. With cold oil the Delta Pressure is to great for a paper filter.

They are superior to a stock filter. I have one on my bike. Not that brand. Mine is a KP. Might want to check those out. I went with the chrome one.
We use the same style filters in the turbine engine world. You will hear a lot of comments saying "not on my bike". Think about it and see if it makes sense to you.
Check these out http://www.kandpengineering.com/ http://www.motorcycle.com/products/k...ter-71983.html
I also use the K&P fliter. The filter element has a small magnet that is made into the element media housing to collect any micro sized wear metals, which a stock filter doesnt have.
I also bought a extra filter element to have ready to use when I change my Amsoil motor oil. I clean my filter element by pouring kerosene throught it from the inside out. Then fllush it with some Pinesol cleaner followed by water. Let it dry on its own and its ready for the next time I need to change oil

I also was Looking into this Filter but its Made By K&P and was a Small feature in American Bagger Mag about a Month Back and I think its Sold for 180.00 it has Impressive Research and Like the Idea of Oil Now and Cooling while Riding and its about the same Price as Some 4 Overpriced Foreign Made Harley Shirts! I currently use PureOne Oil Filters and Their 6.00.

From what I've heard HD filters are made for Air Cooled engines. Others may have internals that could damage your engine due to restricted flow...
Where on earth did you hear that? At a Harley dealer.
Read about the KP filter, then make your mind up. If cost is the driving factor, then factory filters might work fine for you. I think that will be the only point that favors the factory filter, even that doesn't sound good after several oil changes. If operation, looks, engineering even the environment are priority's for you, then the 10 buck filter starts to fade in the background.

Soon as I hear of bikes going titt$ up on stock filters I might give those a look see but they just seem like a waste of money to me. When you clean those things where is all the water, oil, and other chemicals going? On the ground? Down the drain? Looks like a big mess for those who don't have a parts wash station. I will stick with stock.

K&P here. www.schnitzracing.com $119 shipped. They are approved for avaition. I do the oil lab analysis and here is what I have found using the stock filter I always got higher silicon readings then with the K&P with no other changes. Silicon=dirt. easy to clean and takes about 5 minutes. Oil pressure goes up much faster than stock filter as well. Dan Baisley requires a K&P filter be used on his builds. I am sure some of you nay sayers are wondering who Dan Baisley is. Dan Baisley is among the most respected in the harley high performance industry.

I don't need a pound of flesh... I easily stand corrected if that makes you feel better. And I hate the environment - I have two Dodge Diesels that will blot out the Sun on command...
