Default Lets talk compression releases please

I am in the planning/reserch stage of putting a 103 kit with cams and headwork on my 08 RoadGlide this winter.
I have three options on CRs:
1.Manual,
2.Automatic
3. Keep the compression low enough to stay away from the troublesome CRs.

This bike gets ridden alot and does some long distance touring.
Do you guys that have them wish you didn't?
Maintenance issues with carbon?
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

I am leaning toword manual but those little buttons must be hot when starting a hot motor?

Thanks for your time,

Doug

Just had the automatic installed 1k on it now no trouble. Did not have them on my last 103 build realize now how much they were needed especially on hot starts.

i have manual releases on mine, came that way, and it needs them. Mine has 95" big bore with cams etc. The rear release on mine is missing the button so I'm pushing on the threaded rod and it does get hot, front is not so bad. I,ve only put 4,000 miles on it, bought in June, have performed flawlessly so far. I think electric would be nice. Hope this helps.

My S&S 107 has automatic releases as standard. Done around 8k miles with no problems. I am still using my original 1990 starter with no problems. So far they seem to be fit and forget! Hope I don't have to change my mind too soon.

I ride with a friend with a beautiful 02 Classic with a lot of engine modifications. He has the manual release and it works perfect. I had never seen one before and I asked a lot of questions and he told me it was trouble free and works great as long as you remember to use it before hitting the starter switch.

Based on what I have seen with his bike I would not hesitate to have a manual unit.

Good luck

From my research I would go the manual cr opposed to the automatic cr. My decision is based on the accessiblity of the 2. The manuals sit by the spark plug and the MOCO autos sit up under the rocker covers. I know the newer autos are supposed to have less issues now from that of before. The other thing I would like to add is the se compensator.

How much compression do you plan on running anyways?
Im running a 107 with low copression (10.2:1) and a good tune and have never had a starting issue. Bike still puts out 110hp and 115tq its extremely reliable, will run on crap fuel and get this.....It starts each and every time without CR's and the stock starter.

I was also borderline weather or not to add them, glad I didnt now. If I would have I would have chose the manual ones as you can get to them easily in the event of a faulure.

I have the manual CRs on my 103 stage IV. No problem for me. Not hot to touch on a hot restart. I'm usually taking my time to start the bike anyway.

Nothing but manual CR's for me ~ my bikes or any builds I do.

The ACR (to me) is a bit of a gimick. They are hard to get to if you have a problem and the are electric. One day... one will fail. Then... remember, all it takes is one "kickback" and Mr Starter Clutch can be eaten for lunch!

Manual will never "stick" shut and even if they don't snap shut, a blip of the throttle will shut'm for sure.
