There is a switch in the clutch lever, I think, that stops you starting her in gear without the clutch pulled in.
Bridge out the switch if you dont like it.

My 2010 ultra will not start in gear even with the kickstand up and hand brake engaged. Is there a setting on the ECM that controls this?
Since I'm old and out of the loop I'm starting a new phase known as "What I don't know about - **WIDKA." You have triggered WIDKA #1 - What is it in motorcycles that allows a starter to turn over an engine that is connected to the entire weight of the machine and its rider(s)?
Maybe a dumb question, but see my sig.
**WIDKA - reserved for questions hopefully really useful for my eujumacation, and maybe for others.
Yes, clutch pulled in. I tried with and with out the front brake engaged (pulled in). I'm thinking this was some safety mechanism and was wondering if it is optional to have it disabled so I can start it in gear.

Road Kings never break down, but on the rare occasion they do I have used the starter on my old 1997 (which would kick the bike over even if it was in gear with the clutch out) to move the bike out of harms way.

Read my post with the wiring diagram. Disabling it is as easy as finding the left side connector in behind the headlight and bridging the black and red wire to the black and green wire.
