The point is that even when the tread seperates on a retread there is some warning that it is going to happen (see them all over the interstates). You might not notice it from the cab of the truck, I guess some people wouldn't notice it in a car.
But you would definately notice chunks of rubber flying off a bike tire.
I agree, my point was, my bike does not have retreads on it, and it doesn't carry as much weight.

the new rubber mushroom type plugs are far superior to the string type plugs. i still gotta get one of those kits. it's easy for others to spend your money, just do what you feel comfortable with. i picked up a screw in the a rear tire on my "run flat" tire on the corvette. i removed the tire when i got home, and hauled it to a tire shop who would repair it the way i wanted. the plugging, with grinding and a boot patch on the inside of the tire. if i'd had the mushroom plug and the rubber cement/lube, i'd have done it myself. the dome stays inside the tire, and the shaft fills the hole. a great system from what i understand and it makes sense. 2200 miles? that sux. hope you get her fixed and back up and going soon, we're running out of riding weather in a month or two.
In Germany, where there are still Autobahns with out speed limits they use a combination patch/plug similar to the mushroom but with more surface area. They can only do this when the nail is a set distance form the side wall. So if they work on tire that travel at well over 150mph on a regular basis I know they will work on a motorcycle that rarely sees 90mph...
Jim, I would love to have your Corvette over here with me.. My Wife's Avalon tops out at 132mph!! And I was getting passed by VW's!!
This debate shows up about every other week (seems like). I haven't seen / heard of one person that has had a serious issue with a plug or patch, just a lot of speculation of what might happen.
Every decision you make you weigh risk vs gain. I think in this situation the risk is very low if: (1) It is a puncture and not a gash, (2) if it's not in the sidewall. I guess the gain is relative to your situation.

Replace it. Had a good friend get killed 4 years ago because he had a tired patch. They must have not done a good job. He had a female on the back and she survived. He actually didn't die until a couple of days later from a heart attack while recovering in the hospital. He was pulling a small trailer and in landed on top of him. Kind of a freak deal but why take a chance.
Thanks much all, I found an experienced tire shop over the week end and had the tire patched. I was advise because of the location and clean pierce this should not be an issue. The just advised to check pressure often.

On a side note I found out that the tires for the 09 and after touring bikes, can only be purchased through the dealer.
I don't like having the the ditribution channel for anything dictated to me. I just hope that by next year there is a third party option.

Thanks much all, I found an experienced tire shop over the week end and had the tire patched. I was advise because of the location and clean pierce this should not be an issue. The just advised to check pressure often.

I know that with the wider tire on the 09 and above, those suckers will be more expensive. You will be lucky to get 15K out of them.
I've got 16K on my second rear (05 model) and it's about shot. Only got 13K on the first one. I'm being a lot more careful. Oh yeah, that's about 15.9K since I had the tire plugged (with a new tube). Put 1200 miles on the tire this weekend.
