Did the same thing here, I used a 12v extra remote I had and attached to an odometer reset button. Installed the button on the right side just across from the other button. Remote is resting up inside the batwing. Cost about $10 bucks for the button and rubber cover from HD

I know this is for BMWs, but it might be possible to make it work with a Harley. Put your speakers on:

I was going to use the acces switch, but didn't like how it was eathier on or off. You can order (for around $20) a Screamin Eagle ultra tourpack lock switch (it's a momentary switch) and put it in one of the blanks. Two wires into it and then soldered to the back of your remote as shown on another post. Saves you from having to drill anything and it looks perfectly factory. Did it on my 08 and now on my 09 SG

Does the entire outer fairing have to come off to install a switch in a blank spot on the dash, or does the dash come off on it's own?

There are 2 torx screws that are a bit tough to get at. Go under the dash and they are at the top and bottom (front and back) of the blank. If you remove one screw on the side of the dash, you can manouver a bit better. Easier than trying to remove your ignition switch and the whole dash.

I had one just like that in the beginning, but the darn thing wouldn't work every time and sometimes had to honk 5 or 6 times. I went ahead and switched to the one I have now and it works on the first try everytime.

The size of a matchbox, no cutting or drilling, you can buy it on Ebay for around $20, it's a REMOCON programmable remote. It works with all garage door openers except rolling code types. Best of all, you can take it with you anywhere you go since it's not attached to your bike! Oh yeah, it can operate motorcycle and car alarms also.
