If one does that, the tang can be compressed which will result in more fuel in the bowl. Also check the interior walls of the needle seats. If they are scratched, like in when the needle was pushed, dropped, slid in place, the scratch will allow extra fuel to pass by. While you're at it, check to see the needles themselves aren't blunted and not seating.
Thanks,
Well the mechanic was me that took the carb apart and that's exactly what I did, I took the fuel bowl off, the emulsion tube and both jets out then I turned it upside down (fuel bowl on the bottom) and swapped out the slide, needle, and spring. Then flipped it back up (fuel bowl on top) and put in the new emulsion tube, high (190) and low (45) jets. How do I check if the tang is compressed? Can you see it? And even more important, how do I go about uncompessing the tang? BTW.. The plugs are jet black now from running so rich. If I can figure this float thing out I'm going to try a fresh set of plug in too.

Hey guys, thought I'd try to bump this up to see if anybody cruising the forum at work has any ideas or can help me out with how to check the float?
Thanks,

Only thing I can suggest is to set the float to the specs in the manuel.

Well the float valve was stuck, and the float was set high. That problem fixed. Now... it wont pull over 2800 rpms in all gears. It seems to rev and idle fine with no load. I pulled the plugs after going around 10 miles and they looked tan/whitish. fine. It coughs and even stalls underload at around 2500 rpms and above. It's got 190 main, 45 slow, stock string, undrilled slide. Any ideas?

A "138"? That's really lean isn't it?

I agree your a bit large on the high side. Check out this link and follow the mods for the replacement main. I've done this many, many times and it always turns out right. Use this as your starting point, along with adjusting your float level, and I think you'll like what you have.

HaHaHa, I can't believe it but it's fixed. The float valve was defective so it waswn't a total lose but the end problem was that I had the air cleaner to carb gasket on backwards and was blocking an air hole. Since I had attached the gasket to the air cleaner to speed up the put together process it went unnoticed each time. It runs great now, has 190/45 jets and the sportster needle. I still have the gas fume a little but I think that may have more to do with the stage 1 air cleaner, lower fairings and a 12" windshield. Hell, I'm just happy to be riding again. I'll have to see what the sportster needle does to the mpg but all else seems to be great. Thanks to everyone for the ideas and letting me vent the frustrations. haha
