Not sure if this is directed at the thread owner or anyone but for me, I was just looking for something different and I wanted a fairing and gauges but not a stereo (at least not right now). My agenda is more for looks (lowered, blacked out hotrod) as I wouldn't put a windshield on my RK as I didn't like the look. If you pay list for all the parts, it will be very expensive but if you take your time, you'll find some deals and NOS parts can be had for 20% most anytime to 30% at times. If I hadn't had so much wrapped up in the engine, I'd more than likely have sold it to move to a Street or Road Glide. Without the hard bags that I bought new the cost is well within the cost of buying the removeable fairings complete with stereo. The biggest issue is turning into making sure the wiring is done right and with using the stock RK main harness (replacing the harness is pricey). The process is not as straightforward as I had hoped but it's a fun project and it will be well worthwhile in the end.

Definitely agree with changing out the dash if going with gauges which I've done. With regard to looking funny, I agree that if going for the complete SG look, the tank should be changed but it looks much better IMO with the lower profile SG console than it did with my RK Custom console which I was no fan of and you don't need to use the SG fuel filler if you don't want to, just the console. I replaced the RK fuel filler and fuel gauge with flush mount units which will be blacked out as well. It's all personal preference..

Very interested in any detailed information you can provide as I'm in the process of acquiring the parts to add a batwing fairing to my '06 RK Classic, especially any lessons learned. Looking forward to the completed post and pictures.

Default Road King to Street Glide

Here are some pics of the bike finished (I'll add some more later). Still have a few things to do as I didn't get to powder coating but overall I'm very happy with the results. Alot more work with regards to wiring that I anticipated and waiting for back ordered parts took up most of the time. For those that have asked for the parts listing, I'm working on cleaning up the list as some items I ordered ended up coming with another ordered item so I have some spares I didn't need. Wasn't a cheap conversion but by selling most of what I took off I've been able to split that in half.

First off, this is not a high tech project. Actually very straight forward. Get a parts manual for your year of bike. Make a list of parts from the fairing drawings. Don't leave out anything... This is what I did when I built the Custom Bagger. Instead of HD guages I went with Dakota Digital and I used the Biketronics radio with Hogtune Speakers and Tweet Pod. I would replace the RK Speedo with FLHT console/gas cap. Most importantly, I'd pull the tank and replace the interconnect wiring harness with one from an Ultra. It'll save you a lot of hours in the wiring department. With the correct interconnect harness you'll be able to follow the wiring diagrams from the Service Manual. Wiring will be very straight forward. Don't forget to get the handlebar switch housings, switches, etc. This won't be cheap. For example, painted inner fairing, $400, Radio $500, Dakota gauges $1000, painted outer fairing $600, etc, etc....Ebay is a good resource...
Lastly, If you want it done do it. Go for it, you'll surprise yourself!
