Default noise in primary

Posted this in trans/primary forum but it's a ghost town... maybe get som resopnse here

I have noticed a whirring noise in the primary lately, I have about 13,500 miles in the clock.
Has anyone had to replace the shoe for the hydraulic adjuster in the primary?
Is it true you can use ATF in the primary?
Will it shift harsher?
Going too pull it apart this weekend but would like some input from an experienced member who has been there...

my 08 has the whirling sound also. Dealer says its nomal. I've heard other bikes make the same noise. time will tell. I hope its not a bad omen of problems to come.

My bike makes all kinds of noises. They all seem "normal" to me. I did find that switching to ATF in my primary made it smoother shifting. The clutch engagement smoothed out (although I still need an adjustment in there I think). Overall I'm happy with the way the ATF is working, but it didn't seem any quieter in there.

Its probably normal but I had that noise after my 103 build and my primary nut was backed off. Cleaned it up and road it ever since and no noise at all. I got a case of the HD Synth 3 oil from someone so I run that in my primary and can't hear any noise over top end ticking....

well, it seems like im there now too..mine is an 07 ultra got 32,000 on it and i never did hear a "whiring" sound in mine although after asking around i hear it normal, they changed the adjuster to different type in 07..but what i have is the occasional "rocks in a can" sound...what i have been told is that it might need to be reset...also the techs i had talked to said to get on it a little bit ( yeah i do baby it ) and it might just come up one more click and stop my noise otherwise pull the primary and check it out...i know thats a diffefent issue that you are having,,,but the whirr seems to be normal....

Default whurring...

Well I know there should be some noise from the "combine" type setup but
I also noticed the oil pressure dropping when hot (and it's been hot here in Texas) but I also had another weird thing happen, as i approach the last 5 miles of the 17mile ride home from work I looked down and noticed the neutral light on Will going down the road in 4th, and 5th, and 6th
when i stopped at a light to turn into the sub division the light still on,
I look down to see if a wire popped of (this is when I heard the noise a whirring noise that i thought wasn't normal) the light stayed on all the way home, shut it off, waited for the bike to cool off and fired it up and lo more light, and the "more than normal noise is less noticeable but still there.
what do you think, tear it down? inspect?

ya know,,oddly enough my neutral light did that a few times when it was new ,,but hasnt done it since ,,,,kinda just thought that maybe the ground wasnt making at the switch ,,im thinking its just the threads and they do have sealing compund on them ...i dunno about tearing it down or not but if nothings wrong all ya got in it is a gasket.......i guess if there is you ought to see it right off,,,,maybe ask a few techs first...everyone i talked to said they whine,,,me i never did it hear it...

Is the noise going on all the time when the engine is running? Does it come and go with the clutch engaging or disengaging? Have you found anything that makes it better or worse?

If you hear the noise when the clutch is out and go away when the clutch is in and tranny in gear, good chance its the inner primary bearing/race. Try different combos of clutch in/out, in gear, in neutral, moving, not moving and see if you find some common ground when the noise is made. Report your findings and see if we can help!!
