Same here. My neutral light would come on during the first year and and half in most any gear after it got warm. Was going to take it to the dealer but the damn thing went out and haven't seen it since. Go figure!

Has anyone tried the upgraded compensating sprocket (Screaming Eagle 40274-08), wondering if its a fix for the "engineering by-product... noise!" Every '08 or newer touring bike I've had experience with has the whinning sound aka "simulated supercharger" and / or a clunk out of the primary... prevalent when accelerating from a stop, there just as you finish letting out the clutch.

I have a 07 Ultra and the motor sounded good till around 12000 miles. It slowly got worse with the wirring noise soft at first then it just keeps getting louder. It is the same with the clutch in or out and follows the RPM. It sucks you cant look at it without taking the whole primary cover off they should have left the inspection plate. It really bothers me to listen to it each day. The dealer told me it was my bell which is monted on the frame under the motor I couldnt believe it 41 years of riding and the noice is the bell. I will just keep on riding it till something happens.

13k miles on an 08 Street Glide and my primary sounds like a can of rocks in first and neutral - it a little noisier than usual in other gears. I am on a trip - currently in Dillon, CO the closest dealer is Freedom HD in Denver, 65 miles away. I have the upgraded towing so they would tow it for free but I am thinking to save time I will drive it. Anyone see any problems doing that?

I think I replied to your post about this in the other forum. Mine turned out to be a bad race. Might want to check it out. And yes, you can run ATF in the primary without any trouble. That was most definitely not what caused the race to fail on mine.

I know this started as an old thread, I found it while searching for the Whirling sound issue coming from my primary.
on my 09 Ultra.
I first noticed this while on an extended ride. On a hot day (low 90s) After cruising at about 70mph for over an hour, I pulled to a stoplight, with the clutch pulled in the whirling sound was really loud. It sounded somewhat like the 5th gear noise, only much louder. I found the noise is not present or hardley noticeable while the weather is cool, or before the bike completely warms up. I also found that the noise quiets down as I let the clutch back out and begin moving again. I also found that the noise is much louder if im pulling up to a stop and pull the clutch in while in a higher gear (3rd,4th) to coast up to a stop, and much quieter if i pull in the clutch down shifting all the way to 1st coming to a stop.

Does anyone else experience this same problem?

I feel this is one of those events that if i take it to the dealer they will say they do not hear anything unusual or that it is normal for this bike.

I'm having the exact same thing going on right now. It's driving me nuts, because I know that sound wasn't there a few months ago.

I am having the same problem with my 08 Ultra. I talked to my mechanic friend at the local HD shop about it. It whirs really bad when started in neutral with the clutch in or out, then stops when popped into first but starts back up again as soon as I start rolling. It gets louder the faster I go in each gear dropping in volume with each up shift and then climbing again as I speed up. This started about 3K miles ago and has gotten really bad now.

He told me there was a problem with 07 and early 08's with faulty races in the inner primary and without a doubt that was going to be my problem. I have 36,000 miles on it now, but it is still under warranty till February. He is going to repair it with the new race and bearing next Wednesday. It is supposed to be a 2 - 3 hour job depending on how difficult the race is to remove.

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I thought I would post a reply for anyone else looking for this problem. I will do a follow up post after the work is done.

This is what the inner primary race looked like from my Ultra. They tell me there was an issue with the temper of the race in some of the 07 and early 08 models. Since mine was still in warranty I wasn't out anything. It took them about 2.5 hours to replace the race and bearing. The whirring is gone now and it runs great. I have 35,600 miles on it now, but it started the whirring around 32,000.
