you guys are lucky the dealership is a big freaking rip off they charge for everything and there expensive. what is all in the first maintenance it's basically a oil change isn't it??
I paid 250.00, syn. in all 3 holes. There is about a 30 item check list they go thru. It's more than an oil change. The first 1000 mile service is an important one IMO. Making sure everything is adjusted properly and engine running like it should. To me, 250.00 is a small price to pay to make sure your 20K+ investment is safe and running like it should.

Oh Ya! When the dealer works on your "new, under warranty" bike you are gonna get lubed all right. Unless there is a rod sticking out the side of the motor, I am not entirelly sure just what the hell they do cover. Anybody?
When I had my 1000 mile service done from my dealer, they gave me a "check list" of all they did. I'll be using the same check list when I do my next service myself. I purchased a maintenance manuel for my bike which tell in detail what to do when servicing the bike and also has all the torque requirements on bolts, nut, etc.

I paid them for the first and last "service" I am ever likely to. Had them do the 1000 miles service and put on an HD oil cooler while it was in there.
$373.00 with Syn3, $300 for the cooler, 2.5 hours shop labor to install oil cooler. I think the total OTD was around $940.
I have always worked on my own cars, and seeing the rates HD dealers are charging, I will be doing the same on my scoot. New or not. There's also a local indy "Sinister Cycles" that advertises very competitive rates for tuning, engine builds, etc. I may give them a shot at a 103 down the road.

I paid $318 and was glad to do it even tho I coulda done it myself... Don't understand the people that call them "stealers" but when they bought the bike for 20 - 30K they were probably their best friend...
I think that when I pay this much for a bike another couple hundred bucks is cheap "insurance" that I have met all the obligations to keep the bike running as stated by the manufacturer. In these days of legal hassles I do not want to take a chance of having something go wrong and then the MOCO say "hmmm no 1k maintenance..no longer covered"
Now having said that I do agree that they charge ridiculous amounts for shop charges and have had bad experiences with dealers in the past...but then I did not recommend or return to those dealers.
Local dealer here quotes between $450 and $475 for the 1000 mile service. Seems a lot more expensive than just a couple years ago, and most of the stuff they check are things just about anyone can do.

The dealer where I purchased my bike was charging 350 plus tax for the 1000 mile service. They couldn't or wouldn't install a PC V on my bike so I took it to an INDY and they charged 280 Plus tax for the service.
I am not sure how thorough they were though because one of the bolts was finger loose on the right floorboard when I checked it about 200 miles after the service.
