I have read a lot of post on cams. I am getting ready to install new cams in my 06 Street Glide. Is there really the value here to buy this as well??

"This kit updates the cam chain tensioner of your early-model Twin Cam
engine to the latest design, as featured on the Twin Cam 96 engine. The
billet cam support plate has been designed to allow the installation of the
late-model hydraulic cam chain tensionser to early Twin Cam-equipped
models. These hydraulic cam chain tensioners will significantly outlast the
spring loaded tensioners, and are an ideal addition to an engine modified
for improved performance. In addition, ’02-’06 models feature the latemodel
single row front cam chain and sprockets (’99 – ’01 models use the
xisting front silent chain). The kit includes the improved late-model oil
pump that increases flow by 8% and scavenging by 22% to enhance other
performance upgrades.

Personnally I would go and change it to gear drive and never worry about it again.

I'll be installing this kit with new cams shortly. Didn't want to deal with gear drive or the spring loaded tensioners anymore. If you go the gear drive route make sure to check your crank runout first.

The debate will rage on. You really have to decide how long you are planning on keeping the bike. If you can't justify the money for the SE upgrade, then the gear drive upgrade is hard to swallow too. For the $150 or so to replace the tensioners ever 30k miles or so you can get almost 90K miles worth of riding.

having said all that, i chose to install the SE upgrade in lieu of gear drive. Bought the kit from LakeShore HD, got it for a good price, and i know i won't have to worry about being on the road and having a catastrophic failure with my tensioner shoes.

Much like anything when it comes to these machines, opinions vary, ultimately it will be your decision. For every person you come across that loves what they did there will be someone else that swears its the worst thing to do.

It's not just the tensioner upgrade with this, it's also a better oil pump. Kind of a win win situation. If you don't do it, you will wish you had - later - just like everything else.

TheShrink makes a good point about the oil pump as well, certainly have that added benefit. My philosophy at the end was "if i'm gonna have the thing open for a new cam, might as well "fix" the tensioners"

I have 16500 miles on the motor. Nothing wrong with it. I am having the cams changed in just over a week, as well as changing the shoes/tensioners too. I already have a baisly spring to replace the stock oil spring, but I am just trying to figure out of this would be worth the coin to change out.

I thought about the gear drive cam setup too before I ordered the new cams, but I did not want to deal with the runout factor. I most likely would not have an issue with run out, but did not want to take the chance on it.

I would hope to keep this Harley for a long time. I just had the 5-speed tranny swapped out for a Baker DD6 and I really like iton the highway.

Just trying to see what you folks really think about the cam plate and having that put in too.

HDR, if you end up going the kit route there's a guy(Herko) that dawg told me about that puts his own kit together for this. It's the HD Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioner Plate Upgrade Kit you referenced above, plus he adds a lot of other stuff you'd need in one complete package. I just bought one from him and it worked out great. I did a lot of research on the HD kit and haven't found any problems with it yet.
