Default Problem With Oil Temperature Gauge, Yes or No?

Be aware there is a problem (at least I think there is) with some of the oil temp gauges that Harley is currently supplying, at least the black faced ones. While installing the gauge kit #75265-04 I noticed just looking at the gauge it didn't look right relative to the other gauges. The face of the gauge is back from the glass, revealing a white outer edge. It's quite noticeable in the daylight, even worse at night.
The dealer had to order another one to exchanged it but it came in the same way. They talked with HD who said "that's the way they are supposed to be." I called HD and explained the problem and asked who was making the gauges for them. They said "they had switched suppliers a while ago but this is the way they are made now". Geesh. HD later called me back, after they again spoke with my dealer and asked if I'd send some pictures so they are at least not totally blowing me off. It seems to be an obvious manufacturing error to me and one that could be a PIA for customers and dealers if their mechanics don't catch it. Here's the pictures I sent. There is one not lit, one lit, different angles and the other gauge for comparison. Riding at night this gauge has a bright light surrounding it while the others are just back-lit.

I have two bikes I have installed this on. One in black and one in silver. Both have this gap and weird halo lighting at night.

Also you'll notice the needle on this gauge does not have a needle stop like the other gauges on the bike.

Well, just checked mine and it's the same - had like two years now. Thanks a bunch, now it's going to bug the heck out of me.

How about the McEwan gauge? Anyone with one care to comment on whether it's the same?

Thanks,
Steve R.

I have a mcewan gauge, it does not look like that. it also only goes up to 300* and I believe the HD gauge goes to 350*..theres a reason for that as I pegged out my gauge last summer...the McEwan is a good match though and does not have that line at the bottom

I have the HD silver faced oil temp gauge and it also has this gap. I figured it had to do with the illumination of the gauge face.

I got the McEwan gauge on my bike too. Same as MS3300 said, it does not look like that. BTW, mine used to peg out too. Got an oil cooler and that fixed it. Don't need an HD gauge that goes to 350 now.
