I have the 103 with head work and 258 cams. I am very happy with the results. It sounds like with the RPM range you are riding in, you could change to an Evo 30 tooth drive sprocket and be good to go. Then if you still want more, go with a build or cams. The sprocket is a great way to add some bottom end at a very little expense. I had that set up on a previous 07 SG with HQ 500 cams. I am actually going to change my sprocket on my current bike to the Evo pretty soon.

I'm sure the HQ package will get you a little more performance than the HD103 but 1400 is a good price for the HD upgrade. Does that include a dyno tune or just the canned map? A dyno tune is really what you want to get the most out of it plus it will keep you from having hot start problems. The HD103 with the 255 cams will get you the performance your looking for. The 255 cam works good for that down low grunt your after. I'm not sure you would need the head work for the lower RPM's your talking about. I'm very happy with mine and I didn't change heads. Up to about 4500 RPM's it pulls real hard, anything above that you won't tell much difference. I don't spend much time above 4500 but I'm finding I spend more time up there now My warranty is still good [at my dealer anyway] which helped me with my decision. If I were looking at the HQ package I would probably pay a little more and go with the 107. I don't think it's that much more in price but a whole lot more in performance.

I love them. From 2500 rpms on you better be holding on if your in the throttle. The 255 may be stronger off the line as others have said but I am very happy with what I have.
HD has a kit in their new Screamin Eagle catelog that does not include the air cleaner or exhaust, you can save some money cause all you need are the pistons jugs and cams (and gaskets and labor).

Monkish, when you changed out the sprocket how did you recalibrate your speedo? I was thinking of doing the same thing but the speedo error is stopping me.
Thanks guys for the info; this is a great place to seek advice! I think I'm gonna do the SE103 with 255s as I that's really all I need. After reading about Dalton, Phil and other HQ builds it's easy to get excited about more but I'm really not into real aggressive riding or high speeds so I think I'll use the saved money to improve my stereo and better lighting for safety. I'm adding an Arc Audio system and the European RG headlamp with some rear LEDs for the Tour Pack and run/brakes LEDs. I can do all this for about $2500 that's about 2K less than with the HQ although I know HQ would give a lot more power and probably more durability long term.

There was a thread here about hard hot starts with the SE103 and some were installing compression releases. My service manager says they are not necessary with a good tune on a 103. I said you guarantee that, he says yes sir, so we'll see.
+1 on what your mgr said. I have a 103 and never had an issue whether in 30 degrees or 101 degrees.
To bad just bad. JP Cycles has an adjustable speedo calibrator. Its $109 I think, I bought one but havent got around to installing it because I havent found the wire to splice into. BTW it plug n play.

I can only say I have used HQ before and if things are tight I would wait untill I could afford it which is exactly what I am doing there work is is A+.
I am only doing the cams this winter and in a year or two I will do the top end, I am also doing the 30t Evolution front drive sprocket, I have had it laying in the garage for months and haven't gotten it installed yet, but I will before spring.
I am betting that between the air cleaner, exhaust, cams and SERT that I will be happy for a couple of years.

Dakota digital has a unit that will correct it. Not sure what it is called.
