Default Superblackhawk Hunter

Anyone here a Ruger enthusiast? I'm thinking of purchasing a Superblackhawk Hunter in Stainless with a 7 1/2 " barrell 44 mag. Read some good reviews on this single action. This one comes with scope rings and adjustable iron sights too. Was thinking on the Taurus Gaucho?, but reviews were mixed. Does anyone know what the difference is in the Bisley hunter (grips maybe) and this one? Thanks, Jim

The Gaucho is a pretty big departure from the intended purpose of the hunter. Personally I like the Ruger single actions. Their triggers aren't the best, but nothing that can't be fixed and they are rugged.

yep, the trigger pull is easy on the ruger SA's to change. like from 6 lbs to 3 lbs, just a spring adjustment. Check out the poor man's fix for ruger. I know I want the 44 mag in SA, and that hunter is perfect. Very rugged build.

Larry Kelly of Magnaport fame and several others like him have taken game all over the world with the Ruger single action 44 mag. It takes a little more skill to hunt with a handgun but I've seen pics of some of the game that he has shot and I am impressed with his skill. I feel that single action handguns are easy to work on and Ruger has a good rep as a hunting handgun. A scope will allow you to extend your range over iron sights and also make it a little more accurate to shoot. I am trying to think of the reasons behind a Bisley grip but not sure of the correct answer. I've seen some high end hunting handguns that have used the Bisely grip so maybe it has something to do with controlling the recoil better, not sure. Maybe somebody else here will have an answer to that part of your question. I have had a Super Blackhawk in the past and enjoyed shooting it, but then again, I am a single action fan. From the reading that I have done, I think that the Blackhawk would be an excellent way to go. Good luck

You're right about the recoil. The shape of the bisley grip allows the gun to rock in your hand, thus absorbing some of the recoil, according to one site I was checking out. I like the SB with the dragoon style trigger guard also, but barrel isn't ribbed, and doesn't accept scope mounts.

Yes, I too love Ruger SA's, especially the old models. Between the Bisley and the Super Blackhawk, I would choose the Bisley, though I like and own both. The SBH grip angle causes more muzzle flip for me, and I'm not a fan of the squared-off rear trigger-guard. I've shot fullhouse 350-gr. bullets out of my Bisley and much prefer the grip shape, especially for handling heavy loads.

I've had the super blackhawk and currently have a redhawk. I like the redhawk much better. It cost a little more but seems to shoot better then my blackhawk.(double action too) I believe the hammer is configured differently on a bisley as well as the frame and grips. Both can be made to shoot very well.

I have a Super Blackhawk 44 mag and a Super Redhawk 44 mag and they are both great hunting revolvers. I have been hunting deer in Iowa since I was a young boy, and if you hunt deer in Iowa you know that you will be using a shotgun with slugs. They get the job done but they have very limited range, the accuracy isn't the best and they kick like mules. When Iowa opened up a hangun season some years back I bought my first Ruger revolver, the Super Redhawk, I have taken a deer every year since with that gun and I love it. I am going to Colorado in Oct. for Elk and I will take the S.B. for a side arm, but if the opportunity presents itself I will use the it on the elk. The only draw back with the Redhawk is a holster. I have a scope on mine and there is only 1 holtser that will accept it and you can't really wear it on your side. Now as for the Blackhawk it is iron sights and it will stay that way. As for triggers on the Rugers , I bought a kit from my local gun shop that is an easy solution to the trigger problems others here have talked about. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys. Friend at work has the Bisley, and he too said that the dragoon style trigger guard bangs his knuckles. His is 45 cal. I think I'm leaning towards the SBH hunter. You'd think a single action would be a tad more accurate than the double(redhawk) since there's less moving parts IMHO, but I love the look of the SA's anyway. More character....

Different grip angle and slightly more length on the Bisley vs the SBH. Have had a Bisley 44 Mag for years that I too use to hunt deer in Iowa and absolutely love it. 7 1/2" barrel with iron sights using handloads and it is a tack driver.
