Does anyone have a checklist that they use for the 1K service. I have been a mech for 25 years and I feel that I can do it as well or better than anyone the dealer employs. I can se spending 200 to 300 dollars on something the average mech can do.
ok, I skipped some of the posts to reply.
#1, dealer can NOT void the warranty because he did NOT do the service, you did it yourself, or at an INDY shop
He will try, and you will be in for a fight then, if anything does happen. HD knows they have more money than you and me, so they will try to wear you down. But They can be beat, I know, I beat them on mine and girlfriends.
If you are competent, by all means do it yourself. Keep the receipts for all fluids, filters etc.
Sign off the date, mileage and who in your owners manual.
If not have an INDY do it.
The Indy here is about $200 lower in price than the dealer.
That's a good idea, but I'd still rather do the work myself. Ever walk into into a service bay and see the sidecovers off a bike shiny side down on the workbench holding bolts? I have, and it won't be mine.

For them to void the warranty because you did it yourself would be extortion. Ford never voids your warranty because you took your car to jiffy lube or did it at home. Come on people get a friggen spine
My 1,000 service on my 2008 XL1200L was free including fluids and chrome filter.
For the 5,000 mile they wanted 2 hours @ $59/hr plus parts and what ever else they found.
I have wrenched myself after the 1,000 mile service. The tricky part of the 1,000 mile service is the steering head bearings free fall adjustment. I had to do it for the 10,000 mile and it took me awhile to get a feel for it.
I agree with HD that the 1,000 mile service is the most important and should be done by a trained HD mechanic.

I've got 2700 miles on my sporty...no 1k service yet. i'm gonna do it at my shop...we have harley davidson certified technicians working here so i'm not to worried...i'll document everything and keep it just incase something happens that needs warranty work..
