Default Rejet, K & N and Air Cleaner Mod

I rejetted my carb last week, got a K & N Filter and wasn't 100% pleased with the performance. The Bike just acted like it had a little more to give. I gave it some thought, so last night during the Monsoon we had, I modified the Backplate of the Air Cleaner to get some more air to the Carb. The pic is of whats left. I had already put it back together when I thought about makin' pics. Got to get some more Loctite or I would have taken it back off and I wanted to ride it first. MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!
Oh it's a 05 883C

Was that the stock backplate you modified? I'm not really familiar with the K& N aircleaner. The pics of that backplate look like it started life as astock backplate. How does it now attach to the bike?

How did the bike run?

Yea it is a Stock plate, it mounts the same way now as before. the 2 crankcase breather fittings , plus the 3 screws that go thru the filter to the carb hold it on, it ran better with the Filter only, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut it is much more responsive now. It is a BIG difference! BIG!
The K & N is about 3/16" thicker than the factory, I had to shorten the Cover screws to get it tight on the filter.

Kinda looks like some sort of model sail boat that can go either way, did you try it in the bath tub?

Just kidding... I used a half inch drill bit somine looks it was used for target practice.

I thought about drillin' it in several places, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it this way, wannhdawg has the Screamin' Eagle Version of what I did. His is what gave me the Idea to do it this way.

have you done anything to your mufflers yet? just a suggestion, but after a few hundred miles you might look at your plugs to see if the mixture needs any adjustment. i did my stage 1 in steps because i'm cheap. when i added the slip ons and adjusted the mixture it was like a different bike. no more card farts, higher shift speeds and more midrange power.
stay safe

I've had the SEII's for a year. Plug reading aint what it used to be now that Gas has so many "cleaning addatives". I am keeping an eye on them though. It is much better performance since I modified the back plate!! Thanks

Well I think I might have found someone to help me out here. I went and purchased some drag pipes for my 883&nbsp\\;and to keep some back pressure I took some baffles out of some old mufflers I had and screwed them into them. I then jetted the carb with a 45 slow and 175 main. I then did a similar cut with the plate (like you) though I only cut like quarter moons on the sides and cut out the big ass cover plate on the bottom to reach the edge of the filter. I still do not have the punch that I wanted in fact the damn thing tops out at 90 it will not go any faster and I do not get any of that quick throttle responce that I wanted. Do you think that I should cut out more like you did? Do you have that spring loaded air trap in there as well, and&nbsp\\;what did you do with that? It hooks to something electronic and I just took it off. Any help on this would be appreciated!
