I was snooping through the Kansas City CraigsList earlier today, and there is a very nice 2007 1200N Nightster being sold for $6,400. (KBB list is $8,650).. Who knows, the owner might take even less for a cash sale.

Seems like a pretty good price to me....

Here is the link with pictures and more information;

Absolutely not.

I feel a little bit more optimistic that I still might be able to get a Harley. I won't give up the dream!

Thanks for the help guys.

Hey BlackHawk! Welcome to the forum!

I just wanted to let you know that a Yamaha V-Star Classic 650 was my first bike and I have recently upgraded to an 09 Harley Davidson Nightster. I know it's already been mentioned on this thread to you but let me say from experience that there is ZERO comparison between the two!!!

The 650 is good as a local street beginner bike and that's about it. If you do plan on hitting highways it will undoubtedly show you just how 650 it is... Don't get me wrong, I thing the V-Star Classic 650 looks bad ass and is a well built bike from my experience but like I said, NO COMPARISON. If your aiming for a Harley, then get yourself a Harley!

If you got a few bucks in your pocket shoot for an 07' HD 883. You'll undoubtedly find one in your budget! Good luck bro!

If you want a Harley, get a Harley. It kills me when kids at work talk about how expensive Harley's are and that they can get a Jap bike for so much cheaper. As has been pointed out, compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. If you can't/aren't willing to spring a measly $6-7k for a Harley, then you probably don't really want one.

You can get a 10 yr old, low mileage machine off of Craigslist for $3-4K, & an older bike is a great way to learn how to turn a wrench.

Asking price and selling price are two very different animals...

Good news for you is that the used Sporty market is flooded, in no small part because of that silly Ride Free program HD sodomized the Sporty owners with.

Get your green together and find the bike you want. Check Kelly Blue Book for a price to work from and go look at it. Cash in hand is a very effective negotiating tool.

I wouldn't go a dime over $6,000 for a *perfect* 2007 XL1200L with all the accessories you want on the bike. I'd aim for $5,500. FWIW, my 2008 XL1200R is worth a whopping $4,000 and that's WITH a brand new engine in it!

That V-star is a more reliable machine, but it corners like a rotting whale carcass and the brakes are pretty lousy. But, you could easily find a late model V-Star 650 for half what the Sporty will run you.

Found an 08 Sportster XL1200C with 70 miles on EBAY for $7,500. Waited until it was off auction (it was within 30 miles of me) and eventually got it for $6,500, last week. So...it can be done.

The fall and the economy make it a buyers market, I've been trying to sell a very clean 06 XL883 with 5600mi and 1k plus in accessories . I listed it on Craigslist for $5500, put it on the forum, newspaper and not a single call. If you look around, now is the time to buy.

Hi everyone. I'm a little depressed because I found out used Sportsters weren't as cheap as I thought they were, as well as Dyna Super Glides. I really want a Harley, especially a Super Glide, but would gladly "take" (can't think of a non- de-valuing term) a Sportster 1200L. I have come to the realization that I may not be able to afford any Harley and might have to reluctantly turn to another brand. I will avoid this as much as I can and for as long as I can though lol.

So anyway, I was hoping to get some opinions on what 2007 Sportsters would cost. I really don't want to go older than 2007 because I'm pretty sure they became fuel injected in 2007. I guess I could go down to 2006 or even 2005, even though I'm sure there's been TONS of updates since then. I know the motors started being rubber mounted in 2004 so I definitely wouldn't go older than 2005 because that's gettin pretty old and I could go buy a 2009 Yamaha V Star 650C for $6,000.

So let me have it. I'll try not to cry lol.

Bare in mind, I do not need ANY extras. I'm perfectly happy with a stock Sportster 1200L. Saddle bags and a windshield are huge plusses, but the Harley name means the most.
Don't rule out the 883. They are a bit less expensive, and you will still have a Harley that is "quick" and will serve you well.
You WILL want those extras...saddle bags, etc., at some point, so save a bit up front.
(By all means, get a '07 or later...the fuel injection...EFI is well worth it!)
I'd suggest you look for a used bike that might have a scratch or two, not as "clean" as some. You will get a better price and you can clean it up and add stuff a bit at at time.
Be sure of this: You can experience really great rides on a Sporty, and it's still a Harley. I know people who have stretched themselves thin to get a bigger bike and regret the lack of disposable income to do anything with it.
You (and only you) know your needs and resources. Be reasonable and let your "adult" rule here. The main thing is to get "some wind in your face", and be happy with your choices.
Good luck, ride safe, and enjoy!
