I have a 06 1200c and wife has a 06 883 converted to 1200. We both have original tires on them with over 11000 miles but some time this year we will need new tires. Been a member of forum for about 3 years and seen opinions on metzlers which a whioole lot like, seen avons, and some stay with dunlop.
Problem i have seeen though is when people say to switch for what ever, they say example go to metzler, but they dont give a reson. I have had excellent handling and etc with original tires on rain, tar snakes, gravel and even in a ditch.
What makes metzlers or avon that much better??????????????????

My first 2 rear Dunlops went between 10,000-10,500 miles. After that I switched to Metz 880's and I just replaced the first rear Metz 880 after 15,500 miles, So yea, about 50% better mileage and the Metz handle much better overall, and stop much better on wet pavement.

How do you determine when you need to replace a tire? How do you measure the tread depth?
My stock Dunlops have wear bars built right into the tires.

I was fairly happy with the stock Dunlop tires, but due to the strike they weren't available when I needed tires. I switched to Metz. They handle a lot better,(in all riding conditions) last a bit longer, and are slightly more expensive. Avon tires are a little less expensive, and made of a softer rubber. Thus they are more sticky, and hold the road very well, until they wear out, which will happen much more quickly than with Dunlop or Metz.
It's all a matter of what you want in a tire. Personally, I'm glad that Dunlop was on strike when I needed my first set of replacement tires. I'll run Metzlers until something else better comes along.

I've run the Metzelers and had great luck with them. When I went with the Conti Road Attacks on the sportbike I later switched to the Continental Milestone for the Sportster because they had the sportbike style tread pattern. I now have 7,000 on them and they still look dang near new.
i was indecisive about the metz cause i got just under 15k on my stock dunlops.
but now i have the me880 on the front and i could tell the difference the minute i got not even a mile down the road handles great and way softer... but still waitin on my back tire (backorder). good luck in your decision

I switched to Dunlop Elite3's on my touring bike partly because the tread pattern won't wander like the original tires do on grooved pavement or metal bridge grating. Don't know if the Elite 3's come in Sportster sizes but the tires are also said to last a bit longer also. Use a penny to check your tread. Insert head down into a tread groove, pinch woth your finger and thumb at the high part of the tire and remove. If you can see the top of Abe's head then you have enough tread left.
ok, your about to help me decide to go aheah and get the metzler's, but just thought of another question maybe youll speak out on. Im about ready to get to the wear bar, but mauybe abother 1500 miles, do I replace now or wait to wear the dunlops out or wait closer to a trip, not to worried about town riding but have a 2000 mile trip coming up in July to colorao from central Missouri,
another question would be is it ok to mix tires, a metzler on front and dunlop on back???
Dunlop or Metzler or ?????????
