OK...it's 'clear' that trying a Slyvania is maybe the best/good choice....so, how do I know which bulb to get? are they like other aftermarket parts at an auto store, and that they have a catalog near by to look up your bike and part # ?

I went down to the local custom cycle shop and bought a PIAA Powersport 4H anti-vibration bulb, 60W/55W. Its the Xtreme White Plus. Low beams is blue tint and the high beam is super white. I have had this bulb on my bike for bout 6 months, have never had to put it on high beams yet, since the low beam is brighter that the high beam on my original bulb. Once you put it on your bike you will never regret it...........O, it did cost me $45.00..........hope you find what your looking for.

will this bulb work fine in a older 1997 1200 sportster without over heating and melting stuff
i ride with brights on all the time, since im near chicago people do remind me that they are on but screw em, id rather see the road and get flashed every now and then, rather than not seeing anything at night.
The only problem with Silverstar bulbs is that they draw more power than the stock bulb and as a result, run very hot. A better choice IMO, though more expensive, is a PIAA bulb. It's every bit as bright as a Silverstar but draws no more power than the stock bulb.

Same basic reason there's a warning on a pack of cigs. To cover their ass from basically any legal matter.
