Default Vapor Lock??

I own an 05 883 Sporty. It is also a California bike. I now moved to Georgia. Last summer when it gets hot, (around 80) I cannot get the throttle to respond when I come to a stop then try and accelerate. It started again today. It sputters and dies at times. It seams to be running out of gas, but I can smell the gas. If I keep the RPMs up, it will not die. I can feel the heat at times. It sounds like vapor lock to me. If it is vapor lock, is there a cure?

Thanks

Well first, 80 degrees in the summer in GA reallyisn't what I would call hot. Wait till July when it's pushing 100.

Vapor lock as you describe it, is possible but it doesn't seem to be a common complaint here on the forum. E10 fuel is about 5% more prone to vapor lock than straight gas. You might want to check the fuel line routing from the petcock to the carb and make sure it's not laying against a cylinder. Also make sure the petcock fuel fiter is clean and that the fuel tank vent hose is clear and unobstructed.

May be dirt.
Try running a tank or two of marvel mystery oil or seafoam.

Thanks Charley. Oh yea, I rode everyday last August. When you get home and have to peel off the clothes. I ride about 30 miles one way everyday. It only does this when it is hot. It only happens after I get off the freeway in the afternoon. A little bit in the morning after I get off the freeway, but not as bad as the afternoon. There was one time when the freeway backed up on the offramp to on the freeway. It died and would not start for 10 minutes. I always use BP.

Have you checked for any stored DTC's? Check out the "Helpful DIY" Sticky at the top of this section if you don't know how. I suggest this because of a number of a problems with the CKP (CPS) sensor when the motor get hot. They will typically throw a P0373 or P0374 code. I've replaced 3 of them due to the same or similar symptoms.

If you have one of those codes, let me know, I have a suggestion that might help.

Thanks very much, cHarley. I haven't checked the DTCs and didn't know how until now. I will look into it. I just found another thread suggesting the crankcase position sensor. If that is the problem, is it an expensive fix? something easy to replace? Thanks again.

It's very easy to replace, only a hex (allen) wrench required. The sensor runs about $50.00.

Was told by local dealer here in Nebraska that some of the EFI sporsters have issues with fuel pressure regulator - my bike is cutting out at high and low speeds every once in a while - he wants to read the codes but believes it is the regulator>>>just a thought - oh yeah he said the regulator issue does not have a error code but can cause others to come up do to stalling
