If you're going to be commuting back and forth to Galveston don't forget Wings Over Houston Airshow at Ellington is the same weekend. http://www.wingsoverhouston.com/

I used to go to the Lone Star Rally when it really was a free show. Lots of vendors, lots of biker stuff, lots of people.
Photos from 2003:
There were bikes and trikes:
And then there were TRIKES!
I never saw that trike again. Awesome sound to it. Runs on Jet Fuel A.
Then they started charging for parking (with no place to park after they took your $10). Then others unpeeled the post-it note parking sticker tag so you can buy another parking tag for another no parking place.
I haven't been to Lone Star Rally after hurricane Ike, but I heard that the 2008 rally was about 1/2 its normal size. I hope this year it will be better.
Just looked at weather again....mid 70s Fri-Sun 40% chance of rain Friday SUNNY Saturday/Sunday. The Wings over Houston Airshow should not have a big impact on I 45 but avoid 3 which is no loss.
Think about this a moment when being critical of last year's rally....it was less than 90 days after a major hurricane....last week our President was in New Orleans promising help for a hurricane that was 4 years ago....the Pres flew almost right over Galveston enroute from New Orleans to the San Francisco fund raiser for DNC. Yet Galveston is nearly rebuilt and fully functional aside from limited emergency healthcare on the island. Some of your favorite eating places may be absent but very few. The airshow is an awesome "side trip", about 35-40 minutes from the rally.

I went in 2007 and don't remember paying anything...but that doesn't mean much. I think you had to pay to park in certain places, but that's about all I remember.
Anybody know anything different? I'm planning on leaving Thursday morning, depending on the weather... I'm going rain or shine, but they are talking thunderstorms. That will definitely slow me down...
