Wife says she would like to learn to ride (great). She will take the MST course for sure but when it comes to a good bike for her I am not to sure as she is only 5'-5" & 120lb. I have read many threads but would like to hear from people that have been in the same situation.
appreciate all the feedback.

Honestly? If it were me, I would get a cheap scooter/vespa/moped if she has never even been on two wheels. But if she is confident, then maybe a used 883 sporty?
Sportster, 1200 low or a wideglide.
Depends on your budget.
It would suck to buy a bike, and in a year get her a new one that she would like more.
Get her in the MSF class and let her complete it before you buy.

It really depends. Sporty's are great first bikes, but they have a really high center of gravity. Maybe an 883L or a nightster as they are both pretty low. But...I would insist my wife get a fatboy low or deluxe.
buy a used metric bike like a honda shadow for her to learn on. spend a few thousand on that instead of the damaged parts you'd have from her dropping a brand spankin new harley davidson.

I agree, the cheap jap bikes are easy to come by. My wife started on a Suzuki gz 250 (paid $1000 for it), rode it for a year then picked out a 07 dyna low. She is only 5'1" in riding boots, so i did have to lower it another 1.5". Now she rides the tires off it!
