Default Metzler ME 880 Tire wear question.

For those of you that have ME880's, my front has 8K miles on it (10 months old) and even though I check the pressure all the time, the dead center tread is wearing much faster than off-center (by even an inch). I've got 3/32 dead center and 5/32 just off center. Anyone want to share their experience with the ME 880's and should I be considering replacing the front tire soon or does dead center wear usually happen? Thanks!!

Johnny, dead center wear happens. The MEtzlers are far softer than the stock dunlops and will wear quicker, however usually it is at a ratio of 2 rear tires to one front. I would attribute part of this wear to the weight of your front wheel as I am ure it is far heavier than the stock wheels were. I'd say you are good to go for a while longer. At laast until the rear wears out. Of course someone else here may have more info than I.

You said you check the pressure often, which is good, but you didn't say what pressure you're running. The most frequent cause of premature tire wear is low pressure. If you're running less than 38 psi up front, there most likely is your problem.

I just use the manufacturers spec which is 42PSI up front and 50PSI in the back.

I had 880s on my last bike (Vulcan 1500) when I traded it in. Really liked the feel of them but don't know how they were going to wear. I thought they were doing fine though. I plan to run them on my '09' Heritage when the time comes.

That pressure sounds a bit high for your bike. Are you using the mfg's max pressure rating for the tire? I would go with the the HD recommended tire pressure. On my 06 with the 21" I did have more wear in the middle at 32psi & I'm getting much better wear at 38psi as suggested by my dealer for the 21".

Sounds like you're using the MAX PSI on your 880's,

I run 40 PSI in my front ( Riding 2 up) 880 and check my pressure weekly.
I run 38-39 PSI when I'm solo and my tire has over 16K on it...and looks good.
