Default anyone done Belt to Chain conversions?

I'm interested in feedback from any members who have done a drive belt to chain conversion on their bike.

Like one of these:

http://www.zippersperformance.com/ca...=588&prod=2167

Specifically, what ratios you used for front/back sprockets and the benefits/disadvantages of changing from the factory drive ratio. Performance, fuel economy, etc.

When I switched from a 2:73 to a 3:55 ring/pinion in my Mustang, the difference was enormous. I'd like to know if the same benefits (and flexibility) can be achieved through re-gearing the drive ratio via a chain drive on my '02 FXST.

Nope. I just like the idea of running a chain drive -- added strength, clearance and a little easier to play with drive ratios.

I looked at doing it because I want the Exile brake kit. When I asked this same question I didn't get many positive responses. Most people believe the belt is the better option.

Chains are definitely the way to go with serious horsepower and torque. They are more maintenance, my '85 FXEF came from the factory with 80" Evo, 4spd and chain final drive. I was always cleaning the lube off the spokes. I was happy to get my '86 FXST until I snapped the belt, I can't win! Chains are easy to make final drive gearing adjustments to. You can gear it down to pull less rpm's on the freeway, and then gear it up for rippin' around town quickly and easily, all by swapping the rear sprocket out.

The kit will require the same procedure for replacing a belt, but once done, you won't have to do it again until you need to replace the front sprocket. I used to get 2 chains to a sprocket set back in the day.

A chain drive is definitely stronger but it would suck to deal with chain lube all over the place!!

i changed my gear ratio by getting a lower profile tire and now it is perfect. i too dont want to mess with oil unless it is my racing bike a belt wont hold. i have had more trouble with chains than belts over my 35 years of riding. still my favorite is shaft drive like on goldwing.

Hey Salsa,

I made the switch from belt to chain (exile kit) and am very happy with it. PM me with specific questions.
