Red face $987.00 bill from HD on 30,000 mile

I just got my Deluxe back form my local dealer. I had it taken in for the 30,000 mile service. I told them I might need a front tire, check the brakes, and that I had a front end wobble at slow speeds. They said they had to replace the steering neck bearings, front tire, and front brakes, along with the $314.00 normal service interval fee. I dunno, I feel kinda like should have been kissed because I sure got screwed.

Question. Do thse bearing on the steering neck go out often? Did I in fact get the shaft also? Thanks friends-John

Seems a lot to me. Looks like they really owe you a kiss. At that price, they'd even owe you a BJ.

Let me tell you about the steering bearing......
I took delivery and brought the bike right down to a friend of mine to check it out.....he said "make sure you grease that steering bearing cause it comes virtually empty from the factory".

Sure as heck....when I put the gun to it it took almost a gun of grease before anything came out the top and bottom of the neck. It was empty.......

So...............ask them if the bearing was shot due to the lack of grease.....if so guess who didnt put the grease in in on the dealer prep? The Stealer........

Did you get the old bearings back and have a look at them? Usually just an neck/fork adjustment works wonders... just did this a week ago and took care of a clunk when going over bumps.

Seems like the steering head bearings are the only questionable item here. When steering head bearings fail, you can feel it. How much did they charge for the bearing removal and replacement, parts and labor?

I think you did get the shaft if you know what I mean. I hope they used plenty of this.

Usually you feel the neck bearing loosening up before they go bad.

I took mine in for the 1000 mile service.... after I saw the bill I swore to them and myself that I would never bring my bike back to the dealer to have it worked on! So, yes, they screwed me over once, but never again!

I've been really lucky, perhaps I have cultivated a good relationship.
I've given beer to the parts guys, the maintenance manager, and others who determine if I need vasaline or not.
