Default 1984 softail

I just acquired a 1984 softail. I've been told it is a 84 custom softail. Is there a such thing? Also would it be a fxst. I don't know much about Harley's but I look forward to working on this one. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes there is such a thing as a softail custom. They were the high end softails of there day.Now
you have the softail standard and what replaced the softail custom is the duece model
i think it was 98 not 100% on year it was changed over to duece.

The memories are flooding back. The '84 FXSTC (softail custom) was the first of the EVO's and helped bring Harley back from the brink of bankrupticy. The first ones had a four speed gearbox and later in the year went to five speed. It was a best seller for Harley for many years. It was replaced in the year 2000 by the Deuce and then Standard followed. please post some photos as I have fond memories of them.

The softtail custom is a FXSTC, the standard is a FXST. The custom had the black and chrome motor and the standard had the satin motor. The softail custom didn't get introduced until 1986 so your bike is a FXST (which is just called a softtail not a softtail standard).

Are you sure about the year of introduction? It was in 1985 that I saw a Softail Custom at a local HD dealer that hooked me on Harleys.

Cheers!

according to the Harley website there are only parts listed for an fxst until 1986 when the first fxstc appears, you might have seen an 86 model in 85? I dunno. The softtail custom is what I have wanted ever since I saw one too, I got lucky and found one while looking for a new standard.

Went through my archives and found an old pic of a mates '84 (must be the FXST).
It was a four speed, kick and electric start and still chain drive.
Love to be young again
