I just got my new Heritage Softtail Classic Ordered it the end of Feb. I had no intention of taking it back for the first fluid change I was going to do it my self Dealer pretty much insisted that they have to look at it at least for the 1000 mile check Or I may have trouble with the warranty later if something happens. Do most of you take it back to the dealer for this or is it just another way for them to get more money out of me?
Thanks
Sheldon

I picked mine up in January Sheldon, and crossed the 1000 mile mark just a couple of weeks ago. When I picked it up the sales guy made a point of telling me to bring it in for the 1000 mile service. Since it's under warranty and that cost is built into the price of the bike, I didn't want to screw up the warranty so I took it in. I figured they would also go over everything and make sure I was in great riding shape. When the service guy finished he said that the next service isn't until 5000 miles, so I could decide whether to change my own oil after 3000 miles or just wait until 5000.
When riders with more mileage reply I hope they comment on whether to change it at 4000 miles or wait until the 5000 mile service.
My Dealer does the 1000 for free I'll have mine in by next week (maybe this week If things go right ) I got 470 on it rt now and 4 or 5 coats of wax It just ask's me to wax it [sm=smiley20.gif]
They don't just change the oil. The check list is below and is in the service manual. While in the process of doing this if anything is found defective it is replaced/repaired under the warranty.
A lot of people that are comfortable with a wrench buy a service manual, the necessary tools, and have at it. Myself I let the dealer do it. Now I'll do everything else. Don't just change the oil and skip the rest. It could bite you in the end. If the services was included with the purchase price by all means let them do it.
The service manual says and I quote.
"Should be performed by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, unless you have the proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified."

yess, But do the actually do everything that is on the list? I guess you just have to trust that they do!I'll be taking it back at the 1000 mile mark just to help to avoid any warranty issues that might come up. My dealer also told me that after the inital 1000 mile check that I can do my own maintence just keep thew recepts and document what I do. I also asked if they had a problem swiching to Amsoil when they did the service they told me that would not be a problem , they also happen to sell Amsoil right next to there Harley Oil.
Thanks Sheldon
