On my 2008 N-Train I ride two up and one up about a 50 spilt. I agree with some of the above. I dont feel it really matters how fast you are going, if you are on that bike for over an hour your back and butt feel it as will hers. Unless you are well over 6 foot I would get new bar risers that have a kick in them to bring the bars closer...made a WORLD of difference. As for the price on that bike I was in your shoes looking at used then went new. Sit down with the dealer and spit ball some monthly payments I think you will find if you were to go one more year on the loan you could get brand new for around the same payment give or take a little. Of course it won't have pipes and such right out the door but you give to get. I have rode both 88 and 96 motors and feel no difference in power. There may be a difference on the dyno but on the butt dyno you can't feel the difference...Either way you go good luck with your buy!!

Buying my Harley was the best thing I ever did!
88 or 96, 5 speed or 6 speed, that's up to you to decide. I have an '05 that has a skinny rear tire, 5 speed, and an 88. I wouldn't trade up to a newer one unless my bike was stolen.
The 'Train can be made comfortable for long distance 2-up riding by changing the seat, the bars, the forward controls (if you're tall), and adding a windshield. In my opinion, it's the best looking bike HD has made since the XLCR, and I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

ive been offered £10k uk about $14k us for my nt over here, but un like your side were short ov used softys, theyve all been xported to europe, which is great news if u want 2 sell! my local dealer has old 1996 evo fattys for £9k!!!

I'm with Thomp cept I call mine a "Narrow Assed Train" and mine would have to not only be stolen but wrecked, twisted up, vandalized, defiled and destroyed before I would ever trade "Up".
My next Softail may very well be a built motor Evo powered bike. One that reeks like gas and leaks a lil' bit of oil. One that dosent need to be at the tuners shop alla time sending his kid thru college. One I can jet myself that only has one cam!!
These newer bikes 99 and up are almost too perfect and pert near any maintained and pre-loved EFI Twin Cam powered Softail is gonna make you a fine and dependable machine. You dont need to max out yer' budget on trying to get the latest greatest incarnation they are all so derned close in terms of ridability and performance that its literally splitting hairs....And yer' wallet!
If they sold a 110CI SE motored Night Train without all the Screaming Eaglet gobbly gook then that would be a palpatable difference worthy of spending a slew more cashola. That will not happen as Night Trains are discountinued for 2010.... 88, 96 , 5 speed, 6 speed, close your eyes and putt down the road on any of of them you would be hard pressed to know which one yer' on.
Until you are on yours. Then it will feel just right!

I bought my '08 Train new at a dealer. I am SURE I paid to much, but to be honest, I am not that handy and I just didn't want to deal with all the possible issues that could come up with a used machine. I have a pretty good relationship with my dealer at this point, so I am not too bothered by paying $$ to make sure things are done right.
The thing with Harley's (that I have come to QUICKLY find out) is that you have to look beyond the sticker price and realize that you are going to be dumping a LOT of $$ into it to make it yours. Pipes, accessories, engine mods, etc...

if your budgets 13k you can definetly find an 07. i paid 14,800 otd for an 08 that had 399 miles. it was basically stock with the exception of street slammer handle bars.
Well... I didn't buy it. The dealer wouldn't budge any lower than $13,500. I think I'll probably end up buying from an individual. That makes 2 Harley dealers I've been to that won't budge on the price. I did get a nice test ride out of it though The stock handlebars will be the first thing I replace. A little too far forward and narrow for my liking but everything else was sweeet! Thanks for the tips guys.

Don't feel bad that you walked away. My first harley I got screwed on because I just had to have it. 4 different harleys later I think much more clearly.
Search around. Craigslist, ebay, this forum. A ton of bikes out there that are like new. Heck, my dealer loves giving out deals on bikes b/c they know they will make it up in accessories. The dealer closest to me though won't take 1 cent off the price. You gotta keep searching b/c you never know.
One last thing...buy the used bike that has almost every modification you would have done to it. Otherwise, you really aren't saving that much money. Pipes and handlebars especially!
